Hello,

The images on this page will be updated to represent my  recent work.  Hopefully, this will give you a notion of the direction I'm moving.

I'm not a fan of using print to support art.   I paint to communicate when words are inadequate and, for me, trying to use text to support visual art is like holding up a building with a toothpick.  Nonetheless, some people insist.  If you're one of the people who must have an artist statement, please read on.

Artist Statement:

I loathe artist statements.

Seriously, They're the miscreant brainchild of unscrupulous businessmen and artistocrats; A modern development spawned from commercialism and good retail business practices. At first glance, they almost sound like a good idea. Artistocrats prattle endlessly about the need for textual support for visual work in the modern marketplace.  It's progress!  What a load of crap.  Textual support for visual work is no different than visual support for textual work.  It's called a pop up book;  They're great for children and morons.

The true reason for the development of the artist statement regards the marketplace and money.  Homogeneity sells and purely decorative art has a broader market share than something which is pointed. Consumers don't like to acknowledge their shallowness so gallerists and brokers have mandated artist statements as sales tools.  With them, the customer can feel smart about buying something to match their couch.

Regarding my work: I think my influences and content are pretty obvious.  If you can't figure it out, it must suck – or you're an idiot.  More likely you're an idiot.

Regards,

Don Murphy
